Foundation Chiplet System Architecture

Foundation Chiplet System Architecture is a Workstream under the Open Chiplet Economy (OCE) Sub-Project of the OCP Server Project. The Sub-Project brings the modularization trend that reshaped data center hardware to the foundations of computing, applying open collaboration and standardization across the scope of chiplets. This workstream focuses on the Foundation Chiplet System Architecture (FCSA). Details about the workstream’s mission, scope, and ways to get involved will be added in the near future.

About This Workstream

Foundation Chiplet System Architecture is a Workstream under the Open Chiplet Economy (OCE) Sub-Project of the OCP Server Project.

The Open Chiplet Economy Sub-Project brings the modularization trend that reshaped data center hardware to the foundations of computing, applying open collaboration and standardization across the scope of chiplets.

Scope

This workstream focuses on the Foundation Chiplet System Architecture (FCSA).

The full scope of this workstream will be added in the near future.

Foundation Chiplet System Architecture

Vision Statement

As AI workloads define system design, silicon must be customized to meet the unique requirements demanded by different use cases and markets. Chiplets are critical to achieving design and manufacturing flexibility and efficiency. This workstream aims to help create a future where proven chiplets and chiplet IP can be integrated into multiple systems irrespective of the Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) used within system CPUs.

Mission Statement

The workstream will develop and publish the Foundation Chiplet System Architecture (FCSA), an Instruction Set Architecture neutral and vendor-neutral chiplet specification. The FCSA provides a baseline for the market, empowering the industry to build interoperable chiplets across domains. The workstream shall encourage contributions to the FCSA as a single open specification will serve the community better than a series of incompatible specifications.

The FCSA shall define common system topologies, standard chiplet types, as well as functional and interface requirements between chiplets to provide a common foundation to maximize interoperability and reduce fragmentation across the industry.

Goals

  • Provide a common architecture foundation to maximize interoperability between chiplets in a heterogeneous environment initially across infrastructure and automotive markets.
  • Establish alignment across the industry on the language and system topologies used to to partition a system across multiple silicon dies.
  • Maximise consistency and reduce non-differentiating fragmentation across system and chiplet designs. Provide off-the-shelf solutions to common chiplet interfacing requirements that would otherwise lead to arbitrary chiplet design choices that could prevent interoperability between independently designed chiplets.
  • Provide a common architecture specification that can be extended with ISA-specific rules and specifications where this is necessary to optimise performance or functionality.
  • Simplify chiplet procurement by providing a recognised specification that is referenced by buyers and industry bodies.
  • Support the growth of a chiplet marketplace by enabling chiplets and chiplet IP to become products rather than one-off custom developments.
  • Enable designers to verify and attest that their designs meet the requirements of the FCSA.
  • Reduce cost and time to market for custom systems composed from chiplets.

Implementations

The FCSA is intended be an ISA-neutral baseline that can be extended as required for specific applications. The following documents or products reference or claim to implement the FCSA:

Workstream Calls

Workstream calls are public meetings that take place via Zoom on a fortnightly cadence, usually on Monday’s at 8 am Pacific Time / 4 pm GMT. The definitive calendar is published at groups.io.

Further calls usually take place every two weeks. The workstream will gladly consider requests to schedule calls at different times that may better suit international participation.
