Incubation Initiatives

Incubation Initiatives is a group of early-stage OCP initiatives: community efforts being incubated with the goal of graduating into a full OCP Project or Sub-Project. The group currently includes the Digital Twin Initiative, which explores how digital twins can enhance the design, deployment, operation, and optimization of open hardware in data centers, and the Test and Validation (T&V) Enablement Initiative, which works to open-source the software that tests open hardware. Longer-horizon technology work is incubated separately by the Future Technologies Initiative. Details about the incubation process and ways to get involved will be added in the near future.

About This Project

Incubation Initiatives is a group of early-stage OCP initiatives. Incubation initiatives are community efforts being incubated with the goal of graduating into a full OCP Project or Sub-Project.

The group currently includes the Digital Twin Initiative and the Test and Validation (T&V) Enablement Initiative; each has its own page linked below.

Longer-horizon technology work is incubated separately by the Future Technologies Initiative (FTI), whose workstreams provide incubation for technology work that is further out.

Details about the incubation process and ways to get involved will be added in the near future.

Scope

Incubation Initiatives currently comprises two initiatives:

Digital Twin — exploring how digital twins can enhance the design, deployment, operation, and optimization of open hardware in data centers
Test and Validation Enablement — open-sourcing the software that tests open hardware, making tests and diagnostics portable between users and standardizing a diagnostics input/output format

The full scope of the group will be added in the near future.

Sub-Projects

Digital Twin

The OCP Digital Twin Initiative recognizes the potential of digital twins to enhance the design, deployment, operation, and optimization of open hardware in data centers. Its vision is an open, interoperable, community-driven digital twin ecosystem delivering efficiency, resilience, and insight across the lifecycle of open hardware and data center infrastructure. Its core goals are open standards for digital twin data interchange and models; simulation and real-time optimization of power, cooling, space, and IT performance; sustainability through lifecycle assessment, resource optimization, and heat reuse; scalability and resilience for hyperscale, edge, and AI/ML data centers; and open collaboration. The initial focus is a white paper on data center facility digital twins.

Test & Validation

The Test and Validation (T&V) Enablement Initiative, an OCP Incubation Initiative, starts from a simple premise: if hardware is open-sourced, the software that tests it should be open-sourced too. Its goals are to make tests and diagnostics more portable between users, standardize an input/output format for diagnostics, and build a community for sharing diagnostics across the OCP ecosystem. Details about the initiative’s scope will be added in the near future.
