RAS API

The RAS API Workstream is a semi-private (CLA) workstream of the OCP Hardware Management Project. Without an industry standard for Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS) management, each hardware vendor’s solution is bespoke and RAS feature adoption is slowed. The workstream is drafting a specification for a common RAS abstraction between software and hardware that is vendor and platform agnostic, lets in-band and out-of-band connectivity co-exist, handles error storms and sampling in its logging, and is generic enough for open-source drivers while leaving room for vendor differentiation. Revision 0.8 is the current baseline.

About This Workstream

Workstream Leads: Drew Walton (Microsoft), Jose Marinho (Arm)

The RAS API Workstream is a Semi-Private (CLA) Workstream of the OCP Hardware Management Project. Participation in workstream meetings requires a signed RAS API CLA (PDF).

Having no industry standard for Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS) management makes each hardware vendor’s solution specific and resource-intensive, while delaying RAS feature adoption. The workstream is drafting a specification for a common abstraction for RAS between software and hardware that is both vendor agnostic and platform agnostic.

The current baseline is Revision 0.8; the workstream meets with companies that share this objective to draft a complete specification that solves the problem statement.

Scope

The RAS API specification addresses the following:

Common Abstraction — a specification for a common abstraction for RAS between software and hardware that is vendor agnostic and platform agnostic
Connectivity — RAS management connectivity that allows co-existence of in-band and out-of-band methods
Logging — a logging mechanism that solves RAS-unique problems such as error storms and error sampling
Open-Source Enablement — abstraction generic enough for open-source drivers to manage RAS reasonably, while leaving room for hardware vendors to differentiate and innovate
