Sustainability

The DCF Sustainability Sub-Project aligns the OCP Data Center Facility Project with OCP's fifth tenet, sustainability. While OCP's IT-focused Sustainability Project targets decarbonization of IT infrastructure, this sub-project focuses on decarbonizing the non-IT aspects of the data center. It engages industry partners to develop technology roadmaps and guidelines that support net-zero carbon goals through innovation and collaboration in products and technologies. In-scope work covers non-IT facility hardware, power, water, GHG emissions, and supply chain, along with specifications, guidelines, and metrics guidance, spanning technologies like fuel cells, batteries, energy storage, PV cells, green hydrogen, e-fuels, and renewable diesel. Developing new sustainability metrics is out of scope.

About This Sub-Project

The OCP Data Center Facilities (DCF) Sustainability Project was formed to align the DCF project with the fifth OCP tenet — Sustainability. OCP has an IT-focused Sustainability Project that focuses on the decarbonization of the IT infrastructure. This DCF Sustainability Project is focused on decarbonizing the non-IT aspects of the data center. This project will engage industry partners to develop technology roadmaps and provide guidelines for the data center industry in support of achieving net zero carbon goals through innovation and collaboration in products and technologies. OCP’s unique combination of hyperscaler influence, vendors and sub-projects such as the OCP Ready Program can be leveraged to accelerate the industry’s sustainability goals.

Scope

In-scope activities include:

Facility Hardware — any data center facility non-IT hardware technology that will aid in meeting the data center industry’s sustainability goals
Focus Areas — power, water, GHG emissions, supply chain (upstream and downstream)
Specifications & Guidelines — specification and guideline development
Metrics Guidance — provide guidelines on metrics
Example Technologies — fuel cells, batteries, energy storage systems, PV cells, green hydrogen, e-fuels, renewable diesel (not exhaustive)

Out of Scope

Developing new data center sustainability metrics.
