Open Network Install Environment

ONIE, the Open Network Install Environment, is a Sub-Project of the OCP Networking Project. Incubated and adopted by the Open Compute Project in 2013, ONIE enables a bare-metal network switch ecosystem in which end users can choose among different network operating systems rather than being tied to a single vendor stack. For switch hardware suppliers, ONIE makes it possible to manage operations around a small number of hardware SKUs, creating economies of scale in manufacturing and distribution. The result is a thriving ecosystem of both network hardware and operating system alternatives. Details about the sub-project's scope and ways to get involved will be added in the near future.

About This Sub-Project

Incubated and adopted by the Open Compute Project in 2013, the ONIE (Open Network Install Environment) Sub-Project enables a bare-metal network switch ecosystem where end users can choose among different network operating systems.

ONIE enables switch hardware suppliers to manage their operations based on a small number of hardware SKUs. This in turn creates economies of scale in manufacturing and distribution, enabling a thriving ecosystem of both network hardware and operating system alternatives.

Scope

The scope of this Sub-Project will be added in the near future.

Open Network Install Environment

Created by Cumulus Networks, Inc. in 2012, the Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) Project is a small operating system, pre-installed as firmware on bare metal network switches, that provides an environment for automated operating system provisioning.

Incubated and adopted by the Open Compute Project in 2013, the ONIE project enables a bare metal network switch ecosystem where end users can choose among different network operating systems. ONIE enables switch hardware suppliers to manage their operations based on a small number of hardware SKUs. This in turn creates economies of scale in manufacturing and distribution enabling a thriving ecosystem of both network hardware and operating system alternatives.
