Scalable Cloud Infrastructure Management
Scalable Cloud Infrastructure Management (SCIM) is a Sub-Project of the OCP Hardware Management Project. Formed under the Future Technologies Initiative in 2019, it became the Cloud Service Model workstream in 2023 and took its current name in 2025. SCIM addresses hardware management for very large data centers of 100,000 nodes or more. It produces documents on architectures, protocols, and data models for carrying hardware management information across data center networks; analyzes existing communication mechanisms and engages standards bodies to improve them at scale; examines management challenges from new technologies such as AI/ML, RDMA, PCIe/CXL, DDR, and quantum computing; and develops predictive models linking hardware behavior to data center financial performance.
About This Workstream
Scalable Cloud Infrastructure Management (SCIM) is a Sub-Project of the OCP Hardware Management Project. The group was originally formed under the Future Technologies Initiative in 2019, became the Cloud Service Model (CSM) workstream within the Hardware Management Project in 2023, and was renamed Scalable Cloud Infrastructure Management in 2025, remaining within the Hardware Management Project.
Scope
The Scalable Cloud Infrastructure Management Sub-Project addresses hardware management of large data centers (100,000 nodes or more), creating documents in the following areas:
