Data Center Telemetry

The Data Center Telemetry Sub-Project, part of the OCP Data Center Facility Project, addresses a pivotal industry challenge: reconciling explosive growth with aggressive efficiency and sustainability mandates. Telemetry, the automated collection and analysis of power, thermal, and mechanical metrics, gives operators visibility for proactive fault detection, cooling optimization toward better PUE and WUE, and regulatory compliance, while helping customers profile workloads and improve performance per watt. Delivering it means securely sharing data from operators’ building management and power monitoring systems with tenants’ enterprise networks. Life safety system telemetry is out of scope.

About This Workstream

The data center industry faces a pivotal challenge: reconciling explosive growth with aggressive mandates for efficiency and sustainability. The ability to maximize the performance of every watt consumed has become an economic and environmental necessity. This shift requires moving beyond traditional infrastructure management to a reliance on granular, real-time data — a capability known as telemetry.

Telemetry, the automated collection and analysis of metrics spanning power, thermal, and mechanical systems, is the key to unlocking the next generation of data center operation. For operators, it provides the essential visibility required for proactive fault detection, optimizing cooling infrastructure to achieve optimal Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE), and ensuring regulatory compliance. For customers, telemetry empowers them to profile specific IT workloads, rebalance loads, and make data-driven decisions that dramatically improve performance per watt.

However, the pursuit of these benefits introduces a critical conflict: the demand for real-time data exchange must cross the most sensitive boundaries in the facility. Data from the operator’s Operational Technology (OT) systems — the Building Management System (BMS) and Power Monitoring Systems (PMS) — must be securely shared with the tenant’s Enterprise Technology networks.
