Energy Storage
The Energy Storage Systems (ESS) Workstream, part of the Energy Sub-Project of the OCP Data Center Facility Project, is an open, vendor-neutral forum developing requirements, guidance, and reference architectures for energy storage in data center facilities. It supports the transition to resilient, sustainable, AI-ready power infrastructure by addressing ESS integration across AC, DC, and hybrid architectures, with a focus on safety, interoperability, telemetry, lifecycle management, and transient load response. It brings together operators, hyperscalers, colocation providers, power-electronics vendors, battery and inverter specialists, and standards experts. An OCP Ready ESS course is available on OCP Academy.

About This Workstream
The OCP Data Center Facility Energy Storage Systems subgroup provides an open, vendor-neutral forum for developing requirements, guidance, and reference architectures for energy storage systems used in data center facilities.
The subgroup supports the industry transition toward resilient, sustainable, and AI-ready power infrastructure by addressing ESS integration across AC, DC, and hybrid facility power architectures. It focuses on safety, interoperability, telemetry, lifecycle management, transient load response, and coordination with adjacent OCP groups and recognition programs.
Purpose
Energy Storage Systems are becoming a critical facility infrastructure layer for modern data centers, particularly as AI workloads increase power density, load variability, resilience requirements, and grid-interaction complexity.
The ESS subgroup will bring together operators, hyper-scalers, colocation providers, power-electronics vendors, battery and inverter specialists, infrastructure suppliers, and standards experts to develop common terminology, technical guidance, and contribution pathways for ESS adoption in data center environments.
