OCP US Summit 17[edit]

The OCP U.S. Summit 2017 was held on 8-9 March 2017 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California, This year's summit had 62 sponsors and over 2800 registered attendees which represented over 550 companies from 28 countries. If you were unable to attend OCP U.S. Summit 2017 below are links to the Keynote and Main Stage Talks, Executive Tracks Sessions, Expo Hall Sessions. Noticeably missing this year was live streaming and remote participation for the Engineering Workshops; however, as you can see below we now have professional recordings of the Engineering Workshops as well. Where possible we have also added links to the slides. (Please note: If slide links are not listed with the sessions then we were not given those decks and you'll need to reach out to those speakers.)

Day 1 - 8 March 2017[edit]

This year our main stage lineup was filled more spec and product announcements than one rack or rather rack type could hold, but we will discuss that later in this post. Jason Taylor, OCP President and Chairman of the Board opened the OCP US Summit 2017 event with a welcome and 'State of OCP' address. In his presentations he included a thank you to the OCP Summit Sponsors, a shout out to our now 198 tiered member organizations as well as hinted to the upcoming announcements that the audience would here about throughout the morning keynote and main stage presentations from our sponsors. Taylor also highlighted the new OCP product portal ("Buy OCP") that the Foundation, community leadership and contributing organizations are working to populate.

Kushagra Vaid, General Manager for Azure Cloud Hardware Infrastructure at Microsoft Corp took the stage to discuss how Microsoft was 'Reimagining Open Hardware Innovation at Cloud Speed' complete with special guest Leendert van Doorn. Kushagra, reviewed [Project Olympus] and looked to future of not only this project which is being contributed to the OCP Foundation, but Leendert highlighted that Microsoft was also testing the ARM Motherboards.

Masaharu Miyamoto of Yahoo America and Yahoo!Japan took the stage to talk about their successful adoption of OCP based compute nodes and how they adapted it to use 19" EIA racks. He also mentioned how they were looking forward to working with the OCP Rack and Power Project to contribute their solution.

Jason Waxman, OCP Board Member and Corporate Vice President of the Data Center Group at Intel® Corporation took the stage with his 'OCP Solutions Accelerating the Digital Transformation' talk. In his talk he looks at open APS's to support the OCP Racks as well as the tools that Intel® uses to enable efficient workload management. He also touched on Facebook's Lightning storage contribution and the role Intel® played in its development. Additionally he highlighted the Intel® S7200AP Server Board aka Adams Pass as well as the universal motherboard for Project Olympus aka Skylake.

The fun and excitement didn't stop there either. Up next was a lively panel discussion around 'Software's Role in an Open Hardware Ecosystem' which was moderated by Jim Zemlin, Executive Director for the Linux Foundation and made up of the following personalities: Mark Shaw (Microsoft), Mark Shuttleworth (Canonical), Dave Peterson (HPE), John Linville (Red Hat), David Dale (Netapp) and Heather Kirksey (OPNFV Foundation).

Facebook's Director of Technology Strategy, Vijay Rao, took the stage to introduce Facebook's full refresh of its OCP server lineup. In this talk Vijay demonstrated how Facebook’s new hardware design advancements resulted in a better experience for Facebook users. The new products that Vijay announced included: Bryce Canyon, Big Basin, Yosemite v2, Tioga Pass and the Wedge 100S.

Rounding out the morning Keynotes and mainstage talks was futurist and CEO of Possibility & Purpose, Steve Brown. Steve looked to the future to discuss the post-mobile era and what you need to do to be ready for it. He states we have to jobs to prepare the data center for the post-mobile era: 1) Speed Innovation and 2) Accelerate Accelerators.
