==Mission:==
The data center industry is at the forefront of ever increasing power usage and greenhouse gas emissions in an age when climate change impacts are hard to ignore. OCP Sustainability is working to enable progress towards industry goals by addressing unique challenges and opportunities presented within the Open Compute Project ecosystem. Leveraging the expertise of the OCP community, we offer an open framework and resources for OCP members and data center industry – vendors, suppliers, and end users - to deploy industry best practices that promotes reusability and circularity.
Data center industry is moving towards net carbon zero goals over coming decade. OCP Sustainability Initiative is working to enable progress towards industry goals by addressing unique challenges and opportunities presented within Open Compute Project ecosystem. Initiative is working towards bringing Sustainability as the 5th tenet into OCP. Leveraging the expertise of the OCP community, we offer an open framework and resources for OCP members and data center industry – vendors, suppliers, and end users - to deploy industry best practices that promotes reusability and circularity.

There is no standardized way to report the carbon emissions for circular business models. How can reporting incentivize circularity?

==Carbon Modeling ==
- Add any topics you want to cover in the next meeting in the document below under “Next Meeting’s Agenda”.<br>
[https://ocp-all.groups.io/g/Sustainability-Carbon-Modeling '''Working Group Home Page''']
- We discussed three main areas where we can converge, during next call, we will start looking at ways to converge on these and sharpen our focus so we can deliver tangible output for the OCP community to act on (whatever that output maybe, as decided by this Sustainability core team).

This workstream focuses on embodied carbon, which is the CO2e emitted by the manufacture of the physical entities within a data center.  Embodied carbon cannot be directly measured, rather it is modeled, and thus this workstream is named OCP Sustainability Carbon Modeling.
This workstream was created to address the following challenges:
*1. Data Access: How to obtain best estimates of embodied CO2e values from the supply chain and researchers.
*2. Data Opacity: How to understand the various methods that were utilized to estimate embodied CO2e at all steps along the supply chain.
*3. Data Grade: How to summarize the quality and completeness of the embodied CO2e estimates.

Meetings are 3PM EST on Tuesdays.

==Embodied Carbon ==

The iMasons Climate Accord (iCA) and the Open Compute Project (OCP) have started an exciting journey in our joint effort to address the crucial issue of embodied carbon and its impact on data center sustainability. Both the iCA and OCP communities welcome your participation in a new Carbon Disclosure/Label Standardization Workstream.

Scope 3 emissions, specifically embodied carbon in materials and equipment, pose a significant challenge to data center operators striving to achieve net-zero and carbon neutrality goals. As we recognize the urgency to reduce the carbon footprint of data centers, it is essential to engage our vast supply chain in measuring, reporting, and drawing down embodied carbon from data center inputs.

The primary objective of our workstream is to develop a standardized framework for disclosing and managing embodied carbon in data center construction and operation. By establishing a clear and consistent approach, iCA and OCP aim to drive industry-wide collaboration and innovation, enabling data center operators to make informed decisions and take effective actions to reduce their environmental impact.
